Peas are safe for dogs
Both snow peas and sugar snap peas are safe for dogs to eat. They are a good source of fiber and high in vitamins C and K, folate, and thiamine. They can be fed fresh, frozen, or cooked. Avoid canned green peas because of the added salt which is harmful to dogs. Make sure peas are shelled before giving them to your dog. When cooking peas, avoid adding any other ingredients or seasonings that may be harmful to your dog. Feed peas in moderation since they can cause bloating and gas.
Peas are found in some grain free dog foods and the FDA is looking at a potential association between dog foods with peas (and other legumes) as a main ingredient, and a heart condition (dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs. Consult your veterinarian if you have any concerns regarding your dog’s food.
