Can dogs eat Mandarins?

Citrus fruits like Mandarin oranges and clementines are perfect treats for doggo. They offer a lot of health benefits as well!

Health benefits of Mandarin oranges for dogs

Mandarin oranges can be a great way to introduce citrusy snacks to your pooch. They are safe for consumption and bring about hordes of health benefits for dogs.

  • Dietary fiber: As Mandarin oranges are brilliant sources of dietary fiber, they can keep your dog fuller for longer while improving gut health. It also stops them from absorbing the natural sugar content of the fruits.
  • Vitamin C: Even though dogs are blessed to produce Vitamin C naturally, adding an extra dose would do no harm. If your pooch is growing old or inflicted with liver problems, it will not be able to produce enough of the nutrient and can get a Vitamin C boost through Mandarin oranges.
  • Healthy choice: If your dog is overweight or has different metabolic needs, a slice of orange can be a better alternative to tasty doggie junks. It will give your dog a sweet snack without adding much of sugar to its diet.

Why Mandarin oranges can be bad for dogs?

If your pooch has stomach sensitivity or has suffered from digestive issues, it’s better to give it a small bite and keep a close eye on his health. From the ground of nutrition, tangerines or Mandarin oranges are simply extra calories for them.

How to feed Mandarins to dogs?

Peel the fruit and serve only one or two wedges at the beginning. Make sure you serve them with other fruits like bananas and apples to add more fibers while toning down the natural sugar content. If your doggo gulps down unpeeled oranges, it may lead to gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea and vomiting. It’s important to keep the fruits out of your dog’s reach by all means.

How many Mandarin oranges should a dog get?

if you see that your dog is doing perfectly fine with the fruit, you can give a few more wedges next week. Generally speaking, the larger the dog, the better is their tolerance to new food items. This means even though a full-grown GSD can easily digest 2 to3 wedges of oranges, your Lhasa Apso may have to deal with an upset stomach by eating the same amount.

What foods can you give to your dog in place of Mandarins?

You may be surprised to know that Mandarin refers to a number of orange-skinned fruits. These citrusy fruits are comparatively smaller in size and can be peeled off easily. You may also give your Fido other fruits like cantaloupe, cucumbers, blueberries, and watermelon as a viable alternative to Mandarin oranges.

Are dogs allergic to Mandarin oranges?

While it is safe to feed your dogs with oranges, make sure you don’t overdo it. Even though your dog may enjoy the taste of citrus fruits, start off with one or two slices. Also, avoid orange juice at all costs, even if it’s freshly prepared. It doesn’t contain the dietary fibers that make up for the excess fructose. For hydration, water is always the best option.

If your dog develops an allergic reaction to consuming Mandarin oranges, it’s best to call your vet immediately. Do not wait for the symptoms to get severe.

Can diabetic dogs eat Mandarins?

Mandarin oranges are a rich source of natural sugars. Though this isn’t an issue for healthy dogs, you should never introduce them to sugary fruits like Mandarin oranges. Even a small wedge can have adverse effects and shoot up the blood sugar level.

We know that forbidden fruits taste the best. But why take the risk for your benign pooch? Fortunately, you can feed your baby with oranges to your heart’s content. Rich in taste and nutrients, Mandarin oranges can be a healthy treat for your furry babies.
