Poppy seeds are safe for dogs
Poppy seeds are not toxic to dogs. Poppy seeds can contain low levels of opium which can lead to sedation if very large amounts are eaten. This is not a concern if your dog manages to eat a bit of a poppy seed muffin or bagel. Other parts of the poppy plant also contain small amounts of opium so it’s best to avoid the plant if it’s growing nearby. Eating large amounts of poppy can lead to sedation, constipation, pinpoint pupils, and slowed breathing.
