The main problem with plums is the pit. It is equipped with a sharp stone, which is present in the middle of the plum. It might lead to choking hazards. Once the dog swallows the pit, it might result in intestines, oesophagus, and stomach damage.

So, it is a must to remove the pit before feeding the plum to the dog. At times, the plum pits are known to split after being fed, so even if you have managed to remove the pit, a few of the pit pieces may remain. Moreover, the plum comprises of cyanide, which can prove to be toxic for dogs. As the plum becomes mouldy, fermented or overripe, some of the cyanide of the flesh gets transferred to the dog.

Also, plum is loaded with sugar, which seems to be an issue for the dogs. If the dog takes too much sugar, it might result in long and short term issues. 

How to feed plums to dogs?

Before feeding plums to the dog, it is necessary to wash the plums thoroughly. As the plum pits are hazardous to the dog, you need to remove them before serving the plum. You should make sure to feed the plum flesh to the dog only.

What foods can you give to your dog instead of plums?

Instead of plum, you can consider feeding apples, blackberries, bananas, cantaloupe, blueberries, cranberries, coconut, nectarines, mangoes, peaches, oranges, pineapples, pears, strawberries, raspberries, watermelon, to the dog.

Are dogs allergic to plums? 

Taking plum in excessive amounts can lead to different issues, such as skin irritation, difficulties in breathing, diarrhoea, vomiting, depressed energy, appetite loss. If you notice either of the signs, you should go to the veterinarian without any delay.
